Naumi Liora is a boutique heritage hotel with 79 uniquely organized rooms that pays homage to its history whilst becoming an urban regeneration anchor for its neighbourhood.
URBNarc was tasked with the transformation of an old run down conglomeration of 10 historic shop houses dating from the 1920’s into a hip yet timeless boutique hotel. A tight timeline, a tighter budget, an 88 year old historic non-compliant building, lack of as-built drawings, no significant exterior or interior identity and clients desire for Feng Shui were just a few of the constraints.
The historic nature of this property required multiple and unconventional spatial layouts which have been seamlessly stitched together by the application of a cleverly conceived motif abstracted from a ‘Peranakan’ ceramic tile found in the original 1920’s building. The motif has been applied to functional and ornamental screens at the lobby, corridors and rooms, to signage, finishes, furniture, art and stationery creating a common thread stitching this hotel.
The hotel employs a kit of parts applied across 34 room configurations ranging from 12 to 32 square meters. An open closet concept with varying sizes and bathrooms partitioned from the bedroom by the motif inspired screen successfully open up the rooms to create a sense of larger than actual spaces. The carefully restored timber floor and the soft furnishings further create a consistency between the varying room types.
The hotel abuts a busy and vibrant street on one edge and an urban park on the other.
Newly introduced balconies, terraces and larger windows maximize the hotels engagement with its exterior environs. The hotel now offers guests the choice of an urban room overlooking the hustle and bustle of the street or a porch room with its’ own terrace overlooking a quiet urban park.
A bright pumpkin orange color and pattern changing lights along the façade of the hotel have created an eye catching, dynamic and street activating building. Naumi Liora has successfully become an agent of change by transforming a former Red Light district within Singapore’s Chinatown into a hip and happening neighbourhood.
